The Scam
BBB serving the San Francisco Bay Area warned in October 2026 about reports to BBB Scam Tracker of people posing as representatives of DoorDash, UCSF Health, and Freedom Debt Relief. In several reports the scammers referenced real orders, medical visits, or financial information, then used urgent claims to pressure people into sharing verification codes or sending money. DoorDash users, drivers, and merchants reported calls or texts about a supposed problem with an order, payment, or account. One consumer got a collection notice matching a real hospital visit date, but the account was already paid and the account number didn't match. Callers posing as Freedom Debt Relief claimed fraudulent charges had been found or that new laws guaranteed debt relief. BBB said the legitimate organizations being impersonated are not accused of wrongdoing.
The Targets
Customers, delivery drivers, merchants, patients, and people with debt who recently interacted with a real company.
Red flags
- An unexpected caller who knows real details about a recent order, visit, or account
- A request to read back a verification code, or to share a password or full card number
- Being told to send money, crypto, or gift cards to "verify" an account
- Caller ID showing the company's name (it can be spoofed)
- Claims that a new law guarantees debt relief or caps your interest rate
Your Move
- Hang up, then contact the company yourself through its official website, app, or published phone number
- Never share passwords, security codes, or complete financial information with an unexpected caller
- Don't use links or phone numbers from unexpected messages
- If you shared a code or password, change it right away and contact your bank or card issuer
- Report it to BBB Scam Tracker and the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov, even if you didn't lose money
