Fake EBT "transaction declined at Walmart" text targeting SNAP recipients
Last updated
Also known as: VDSS EBT declined text scam, EBT card declined Walmart text, Omnilert VDSS EBT text, SNAP EBT unusual activity text scam
The Scam
According to the Virginia Department of Social Services (VDSS), scammers are sending texts and making calls to SNAP recipients that falsely claim an EBT transaction was declined or that suspicious activity was detected on their card, then ask them to reply or call a number to verify it. Some messages falsely claim to be from VDSS and reference declined purchases at retailers such as Walmart; reported examples read "VDSS EBT – A transaction of $34.15 at W-STR using your EBT Card was declined. Reply Y if this was you," followed by a phone number. VDSS says the goal is to get personal, financial and EBT card information, and that you will never be asked to share your EBT card number or PIN.
The Targets
SNAP and EBT benefit recipients, reported in Virginia.
Red flags
- A text saying an EBT purchase, for example at Walmart, was declined and asking you to reply Y or call a number
- A message about unusual activity on your EBT card asking you to confirm a transaction
- Any request for your EBT card number or PIN: VDSS says you will never be asked for them
- Links to "unlock" or "verify" your account
Your Move
- Don't reply or call the number in the message
- Never share your EBT card number, PIN or other personal information
- In Virginia, call EBT Customer Service at 1-866-281-2448; elsewhere, use the number on the back of your EBT card
- Check your balance only through the official ConnectEBT app or web portal
