Last updated
Also known as: grandkid jail scam, family emergency wire
What it looks like
A call or message claims a grandchild or relative is in jail, in an accident, or stranded abroad and needs money immediately — often with a ‘lawyer’ or ‘bail bondsman’ on the line and a request for secrecy.
Who it targets
Grandparents and other relatives.
Red flags
- Urgent secret money request
- Caller asks you not to tell other family members
- Payment by wire, gift card, crypto, or cash apps only
What to do if you clicked, paid, or replied
- Hang up; call the relative back on a number you already know
- Do not send money based on the unexpected call
